>.<

And so it goes. Since I'm going to be on the road in the near future - heading down to northern California for this year's sport-touring.net West Coast Regional Meet - and since I'm now armed with a web-enabled cameraphone with which I can post while on the road, the only time I have anything interesting to say - I logged back in to this place after a long absence, realized I was way behind on patches, updated MovableType to the latest version, and managed to crush my server.

Oww.

A couple of days later and I think I've recovered most everything. Formatting is lost, and some typos or lost pics may have crept in. Hopefully it won't be too bad, though, and now I've had a crash course in server administration so the future ought to be a bit more stable. Hence the Reloaded tag on the header up above.

Anyway. Leaving Thursday. Look for some updates, and hopefully some better graphic-handling and template-formatting soon.

In closing, I leave you with World Of Warcraft-themed porn for your viewing pleasure. That "dwarf" is hot, yo.

WCRM ho!

And I'm on the road. Tonight, Portland, by way of Snoqualmie Pass, south around Mt St Helens, then west along the Columbia...

45 minutes later...

made it as far as a coffee shop in Issaquah. mmm, breakfast. nothing like starting off the trip with crazy seattle rush-hour traffic... ah well. it only gets better from here out.

Resting.

Taking a stretch break at a rest stop about 20 miles north of Portland. The route that I!'d planned for today was oppressed by the harsh reality of 'still closed for the winter' so I had tp improvise, and now I'm a bit behind schedule.

Ah well. Win some, lose some. Off I go again.

Dinner in Portland

Just enjoyed a delicious Cuban dinner at the home of ST-Ner Galo - seven other folks headed down to Fortuna met up here for the evening. I'Ll be crashing here for the night and convoy'ing down with the crew tomorrow.

Highway 36 gets closer every day...

Digger Don!

Nothing like a 5-pound burger for $21.95. On the plus side, if you eat the whole thing, it's free.

I think the table behind us could accomplish that.

Brunch in Sutherlin. Then south on I5 to Hwy 96...a lovely road, that.

Categorical Proof of the Existence of God.

Highway 36 is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. I'm stopped in Weaverville, CA, waiting for the rest of the crew, who I appear to have gotten away from. I'm finally starting to hae real confidence in the VStrom in high-speed sweepwer, though I'm still a bit cautious in tight, technical twisties like the beginning of 36. Anyway, a great ride. Lunch soon (whenever the others catch up) and then back to Fortuna via 299, another great road. I honestly don't think there are any non-great roads.around here. Hooray!

Small-town jazz

IMAGE_025.jpg, originally uploaded by Req(q).

I left Fortuna this morning in the company of my good buddy Colleen, am almost immediately abandoned the traditional roads for a 20-mile section of twisty gravel. Since technically the VStrom is a dual-sport, I figured it was worth a shot, and luckily Colleen was good enough to give me a few pointers... From there we followed a bizarre, one-lane road running along the Salmon River, eventually ending up in the tiny hamlet of Callahan, pictured above. The town appeared to consist of one general store and a tavern, in which a five-piece band was playing surprisingly good swing.

Tomorrow, back to Seattle, hopefully by an interesting route... Stay tuned.

and I'm back.

...and the trip ended the way it began, slogging through Seattle rush-hour traffic. I'm home. I'm tired, I managed to sunburn the hell out of my bald head, I've got a quarter gig of photos to upload, maps to make, and triplogs to write, but in brief: I had a great time with some awesome folks, further developed my riding skills through some coaching and by watching those more able than I in the corners, and I can't wait to get out again.

New shoes.

Preparations for the next big trip continue with some new tires - Michelin Anakee. Pros: good on road, good on gravel, great in the wet. Cons: they'll last 7000 miles if I'm lucky.

Can't have it all, I suppose.
